American scientists have managed to grow liver from stem cells

Many patients with liver disease die due to the lack of donor organs. And those, who underwent transplantation, have to take medications that suppress the immune system throughout their lives, UPI.com reports. According to the scientists from the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, the new method will help solve both problems.

The scientists have managed to grow a liver in mice and in human from adult stem cells and progenitor cells. According to the scientists, about 30 million people around the world suffer from liver disease. Lots of them die from cirrhosis. Until now, scientists could not grow an artificial liver, as induced pluripotent stem cells do not become liver cells - hepatocytes. The scientists have created the elements of organelles of human and mouse liver. After that, they were implanted in rodents. In both cases, the liver with bile ducts, blood vessels, hepatocytes and other cells necessary for the normal function has grown from these elements. Also, in mice after implantation, a human albumin protein produced in the liver has been found. It means, the organ was able to perform some functions.
